Islamism in Europe 🇬🇧 🇫🇷

Islamism in minority contexts has been the subject of relatively few studies compared to the research and analysis devoted to Islamism in countries with Muslim majorities. However, the 2000s saw a growing awareness of the enduring presence of fundamentalist currents within so-called political, cultural and legalistic Islam in secularised societies.

How do so-called legalist forms of Islamism interact with secularised societies? How do they differ from Islamism in non-secularised areas where Islam directly informs legislation? How do they operate in European countries where they have shaped three generations of Muslims?

We have explored these topics drawing on the expertise of renowned scholars specialising in various countries such as Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, etc.

Objectives of the conference

1. To take stock of and examine current knowledge regarding the various legalist Islamist movements active in Europe.
2. To assess their influence on the population and their capacity to threaten secular democratic regimes.
3. To review prevention measures and responses in different European countries.

Organisation

This international academic conference was initiated and organised by Dr Florence Bergeaud-Blackler (CNRS, European Centre for Research and Information on Brotherism), and co-funded by the CNRS, the Île-de-France Region, and the Paris office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
